Sophie had been called from whatever she was doing, and told that she had 10 minutes to gather what she needed and prepare for an intense Danger Room session. She was told that she would need to prepare for one of the hardest battles she'd ever gone though, and that she had no choice but to participate. She would also be assured that she would remain safe, although minimal jeopardy was probable. Now, Bryton Yorkshire sat in the Danger Room control area, typing away on the computer interface, precisely programming the Danger Room computer to fit the exact power-set Sophie possessed.
Sophie Devlin stood in the center of the Danger Room, shaking from head to toe visibly. She was nervous, but it was nothing that she couldn't handle. She kept rubbing her hands together, sparks flying every direction around her and fading on the ground as they landed. The longer she waited, the more she began to fidget. Thankfully she'd put on the outfit she had brought with her that was fireproof enough to withstand her flames, and had her hair back in a tight French braid and wound around her head. She glanced over to the glass and spotted Bryton. "I apologize in advance if I burn the room down." She tried to joke, but her voice was shaking just like her body. She just wanted to get this started and over with.
Bryton's voice came over the intercom, "Don't worry, Sophie. You'll do just fine," his voice said, nice and calming. Then, the world would fade away from her, and she would find herself in a burning building. Okay, Sophie. You need to get out of this burning building, without using your powers and quickly before the building collapses. You might even try slowing the flames down, if you can. This is your first task, and your easiest. Good luck. With that, she would lose all connection to the school. Flames whipped about. Quickly assessing, she might be able to tell that she was on the second floor, and that the stairway had collapsed already. The creaking of the building warned her that it was soon going to fall as well. She had little time to make a quick escape. The front door was barricaded, leaving only the back door, which was on the first floor, in the kitchen. She had to find the kitchen, or make her own way out to get out quickly.
Sophie Devlin quickly realized that Bryton would be giving her no assistance. She had at least thought that he'd be watching, but she couldn't see him anywhere. As the flames grew larger around her, and smoke began to fill the air the sparks she had been producing made her hands burst into flames. She quickly patted them out on her suit and pulled the gloves on that were dangling around her wrists to prevent any more. Her vision was quickly becoming obsolete, and she knew that she had to work fast or she would probably get hurt by falling wood or tiles. Instantly she sprang into action, darting through the doorway just as it cracked and fell behind her. A shard of flaming wood grazed her arm, but she didn't brush it away because at that moment she came to the staircase. Either it was invisible or actually gone. You never knew in this room! She tested the air for a moment with her foot making no contact with anything solid. Taking a deep breath, and thankful to the bullies for once, she used her agility to grip the wobbly railings with one hand on each and swing herself down the empty space to the first floor.
Sophie Devlin, once down, realized that the first floor was even worse than the second. The fire grew higher around her, and a beam fell from the ceiling. It knocked her over, pinning her for a few seconds before the fire swarmed it and reduced it to cinders in a matter of seconds. Covering her nose and mouth with her gloved hands, she breathed heavily and coughed harshly from the unnatural smoke. The entire building reeked of gasoline. With the door barred shut and no way to get through it, she turned and quickly headed in the opposite direction looking for any other exits. In the kitchen, it was almost too good to be true. There were no bars on the door, and it was wide open.. before it caved in on itself and she heard the horrible cracking of the ceiling above her collapsing.
Sophie Devlin looked around, spotted the broom closet and dove into it. The wall, already weak from the flames and head, broke apart with little effort on her part. Billows of smoke poured out behind her as she fell to the stone outside the house and crawled a few feet before standing and stumbling to the other side of the artificial yard and turned to see the house cave in on itself floor by floor. It was then that she heard startled screams and angry shouting from around the side of the house and quickly turned on her heel and dove behind a tall hedge to avoid the people who looked ready to kill her. She sighed a sigh of relief, but knew that the test wasn't over yet. She still had two more to go.. and this had only been the first (and easiest) of the trio.
Sophie had successfully passed the first task. Very good, Sophie. That was just a warm up for what is to come though. Prepare yourself. She would see hundreds of humans gathered around the house, and those that saw her dive behind the bush all shouted. "OY! Guys, ova here! Da mutie's in doze bushes, she is!" one grotesquely large man shouted to all the others. Like some sort of chain reaction, they all turned to look at the bush, and a few of them threw their torches straight at the bush, not knowing that Sophie's power had something to do with fire. A group of burly looking men came running at the bush that she hid in (about 10 of them) and they would, if they could, grab her and throw her into the crowd. Even if unable to get a grip, they would swing their mammoth fists at her in full fury. Signs rose above the group, saying things such as Muties are freaks, kill them all. and This is not evolution! This is the devil! The entire crowd cheered for those that came to front and fought against her. She would be forced to weed her way through the huge crowd. Luckily, they were all unprotected humans. But their sheer number was a terrifying prospect.
Sophie Devlin let out a scream of shock when the torch set the bush up in an inferno with her on the other side. Her hair caught on the branches, but didn't burn. Instead, she lost a few strands when she was yanked from the bushes and also lost her gloves in the rough handling. Thrown harshly into the middle of the crowd with a ripped sleeve and aching head, Sophie couldn't take it anymore and let out a scream of hatred. Fire rose up around her and her body became practically invisible inside of the raging blue and white flames. Her eyes glowed the brightest white of all and she lashed out at the group with the intention of driving them away from her. Each step she took left a scorched footprint. The crowd began to back away, or so she thought, but her vision was practically all white now. She didn't know how much more she could take, but she knew she was getting over heated. "Get away from me!" She screamed repeatedly every time someone tried to hit her with their sign.
Sophie Devlin huffed heavily and continued to duck out of the way from blunt objects and rocks that were being thrown. How was SHE the monster? Because she was born different? There were millions of mutants upon billions of humans, yet the humans were the monsters. With each thought that passed her mind the fire consuming her body grew hotter and hotter until it compressed around her and exploded with a boom. Her fireproof outfit turned to cinders barely keeping her decent, and the flames were no longer just around her. Now the glowing blue and white fire herself, she blew onto her hands and sent streams of it around her and threw small compressed bombs into the crowd to break them up. At this point she didn't care if she hurt any of them. She just wanted them to leave her the hell alone.
The crowd screamed when Sophie made her real outburst, but some of them were only screaming in anger. "MUTANT SCUM! BURN IN HELL YOU DEVIL!" a woman shouted, pulling a gun out and firing off a round or two at her. Some men caught on fire, and paths were made as they ran away in terror, falling to the ground and burning. Some men didn't mind and kept pursuing her. With each lash she made, a few more went down, but the crowd was only slowly getting smaller. If Sophie could see at all, she'd notice a truck coming down the road not too far away.
Sophie Devlin felt the bullets strike her and only pass through the flames of her body. She grinned wickedly, now only content with getting rid of each and every one of these monsters for what they really were. "You first." She snarled hatefully, setting the woman on fire with a blast from a small bomb thrown between her feet. She noticed the crowd beginning to thin out until she could see the truck coming closer. Was it a fire truck, a police car, what?! She couldn't tell, but knew she needed to get out of there. Enough water would put her out of it was a fire truck, and in the state she was in right now she didn't know if she would be able to return to normal if she was hit with the high pressured water from a fire hose. After clearing a path with marble sized bombs of compressed fire, she darted away quickly but remained ablaze like something out of a true horror movie.
When Sophie lashed out so brutally, most of the crowd backed away, she'd already killed 80 men in that short amount of time, contesting for the massive amount of potential she had, much like her brother. However, Sophie would most certainly hear the sound of her... mother? "Sophie, darling! Please! You must listen. Calm down and listen to dear old mummie! We'd like you to come back home. Can you hear us?" her mother's voice called, as the crowd grew silent. It was coming from the approaching truck. "Sophie! Come now, dear. All will be well. It's Father! Do you want to come home with us?" her father's voice asked now. The crowd vanished as they poured away from her, most of them in terror, but refusing to speak over the voices, for a strange reason. In moments, they disappeared, and the truck stopped at a distance from Sophie. Out of the truck came her parents. It was so real, it'd be nearly impossible for her to not at least look. "Dear?" her mother asked, holding out her hands in a comforting gesture. Her father wrapped his arm around her mother, and they both cocked their head to the side and smiled ever so kindly. "We're sorry. You and Carter can come home now, you see?" they said. Carter Devlin, climbed out of the truck as well. "Oy, sis! Come on then! We're all gonna go 'ave dinna' at the bar, ya see? You comin' or not?" her brother called to her, motioning her over.
Sophie Devlin felt her heart nearly break at the sound of her mothers voice, followed closely by her fathers. Indeed, the illusion was so convincing that her fire sizzled out a small bit but didn't go away. If she hadn't been smart and knew that this was all fake, a training session, she would have fizzled like a burning log in tossed into a lake. She even took a step towards her family, but realized that something was wrong. She shook her head quickly and choked down a sob. Carter hated their parents. Their parents hated Carter.. they hated her too. For them to suddenly change their minds like this.. Sophie backed away, the fire flaring up a second later. "YOU'RE LYING! YOU SENT US HERE THE MOMENT WE SHOWED SIGNS OF BEING MUTANTS!" She hollered painfully, her voice crackling like an overheated bone in the oven. "Go away! Get out of here, leave me alone!" She dropped to her knees, trying to force the illusion from her mind. This was all wrong. Please, she begged in her head. Please, just make them go away. They're not real.
"Come now, please. We miss you both so very much..." they said, but they seemed to realize that it wasn't going to work. They frowned, and turned to Carter and whispered something. He seemed to sink a little. "Sorry, l'il sis. I goh'uh." he whispered. They climbed into the truck and drove away, and Carter stood tall, raising his hands in the air. Fire erupted all around him and he began blasting away. Don't get distracted Sophie... Bryton's voice echoed. The truck slowly inched away, and the fire from her twin kept coming at her. She needn't waste time. All she needed to do was hit the truck...
Sophie Devlin closed her eyes when they continued to plead for her to come home. It was at their silence, then her brothers voice, that she looked up to see the truck start up and begin to drive away. She swallowed hard before standing. This was her third test. She had to be strong! However, when Carter lit his hands and began to throw the fire at her, she couldn't fight back. Blast after blast hit her and were overtaken by her own fire. Blue fire was hotter than red. She had at least paid attention in chemistry and biology, and knew that she could beat him. Her mind went blank and her resolve hardened. "I'm not the scared little girl you burned all those years ago, Carter." She spoke, oddly calm. Warmth began to creep into her joints and she jolted around him, ducking through blasts of fire and ramming into the side of the truck hard. She vanished as the flames licked the metal, and the stench of melting rubber filled the air. Into the interior of the truck she went, melting everything in her path until finally the frame of the vehicle began to sag. Next thing she knew she was on her stomach in the road on the other side of the inferno of a car. She could barely keep her eyes open, and had an even harder time keeping herself from passing out.
After she made her attack and as she laid on her stomach there, the Danger Room resurfaced. Sebastian and Bryton walked into the room. "Congratulations, Sophie. You have done exceedingly well. You are excused from classes for the next 2 days to give you time to recover." Sebastian gave her a few towels and some pajamas. "Please, enjoy your sleep. You did very, very well," Bryton said, bending down to give her a visible nod of approval. He would have touched her, but he knew that Carter remained hot for a period of time after he finished using his powers. He figured she was the same. "Sebastian will help you if you need it," he said. And then he left the room. She had passed.
Sophie Devlin stood in the center of the Danger Room, shaking from head to toe visibly. She was nervous, but it was nothing that she couldn't handle.
